Madheshi Political Leaders Against Distributing Voters’ Cards

Issue 40, October 03, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 27, 2010: four Madheshi political parties such as Madheshi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF), Madheshi People’s Rights Forum-Democratic (MPRF-D), Terai Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP) and Sadbhawana Party have said that they are against the Election Commission (EC) distributing voters’ identity cards based on the citizenship certificates saying thousands of eligible voters have no citizenship certificates according to the nepalnews.com.

It means thousands of Madheshis have been living without citizenship certificates. So, they need to receive citizenship certificates if they really want to participate in elections. However, some politicians particularly CPN Mainali leader of one of the small so-called CPNs have claimed that millions of non-Nepalis have received citizenship certificates distributed during the rule of the Interim Government headed by late Girija Prasad Koirala in 2006.

So, EC must be doing the right thing in distributing voters’ cards based on citizenship certificates otherwise non-Nepalis might be voting in Nepal in view of the open border we have with India. Cadres of these four Madheshi political parties need to facilitate the distribution of voter’s identity cards rather than blocking it.
