High Level Political Mechanism For Breaking Political deadlock

Issue 08, February 21, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

In a meeting of the High Level Political Mechanism (HLPM) held at the residence of NC President Girija Prasad Koirala on February 19, 2010, the top three leaders of UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML has decided to break the current political deadlock submitting a joint resolution motion at the legislature.

The three top leaders have assigned the six-member taskforce to prepare a draft of a joint resolution motion for discussion in the next meeting of the HLPM to be held on Sunday, February 21, 2010.

The main fault is the so-called ceremonial President’s unconstitutional move on directly writing a letter to the then army chief and ordering him to stay on the job overriding the decision of the then Prime Minister on firing the army chef. The UCPN-Maoist wants to correct the President’s wrong doing whereas the NC and CPN-UML believe that the President has done nothing wrong on directly writing a letter to the army chief.

Speaking to the reporters, some of the leaders attending the meeting have hinted that the top three leaders ultimately would agree on firing the current Madhav government for setting up a consensus government.

At the same time, the central committee members of the CPN-UML have severely criticized the Madhav government for not being able to complete the peace process and for confronting with the Maoists and taking the country to the brink of conflict again.

Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister holding the portfolio of foreign affairs Sujata Koirala has accused Prime Minister Madhav Nepal of abusing his authority to recruit the CPN-UML cadres for various vacant positions and has threatened to tear down the coalition government if Madhav Nepal does not improve his actions.
