Irregularities in Nepalese Peace Mission

On September 2, 2009, the Constitutional Committee on State Affairs has set up a Sub-Committee on Investigation Into Irregularities in the Nepalese Peace Mission in Darfur, Sudan sent in July 2008 after the UN has not reimbursed fully the expenses incurred by the Nepalese Peace Mission according to the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of September 3, 2009. Following the agreement between the Government of Nepal and the UN, the UN reimburses all the expenses of the Nepalese Peace Mission in Darfur, Sudan.

The Nepalese Peace Mission has spent Rs 420 millions on the field gear, food, vehicles, local management, health equipment from the Police Welfare Fund but the UN has reimbursed only Rs 103 millions stating the vehicles and other equipment are of sub-standard and not usable.

At the time of sending the Nepalese Peace Mission to Darfur, Sudan, the concerned responsible Home Minister was Krishna Prasad Sitaula. He is one of the leaders of the Nepali Congress.
