CPN-Maoist Celebrates and Initiates Election Campaign

Issue 07, February 17, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Wednesday, February 13, 2008, the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-Maoist) celebrated the 13th anniversary of the People’s War all over Nepal and initiated the constituent assembly (CA) election campaign. The Maoists held a mass rally at the Open Air Theatre in Kathmandu, and a cultural program.

Addressing the mass rally, Chairman of the CPN-Maoist Prachanda said that his party has been gaining popularity among the Nepalese people, among the state employees including the army people. So, his party would win majority seats in the coming election for a CA. Prachanda said that seeing the popularity of his party the national and international reactionary forces have been nervous and are trying their last efforts on derailing the election for a CA. He further said that if the election for a CA were not held as scheduled his party would capture the state power through a peaceful movement.

In January 1996, the CPN-Maoist submitted a 40-point memorandum to the then Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba for consideration with a deadline and a warning of taking up arms if ignored. Mr. Deuba brushed them off. Then the CPN-Maoist launched the people's war on Feb 13, 1996. The CPN-Maoist and the seven-party alliance (SPA) reached a 12-point understanding on November 22, 2005, and launched a decision movement against the despotic king in April 2006, and officially ended the people’s war signing a Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Government of Nepal and the CPN-Maoist on November 21, 2006. On January 15, 2007, the Maoist legislators joined the Interim legislature-parliament, and the government on April 01, 2007.
