On Wednesday, July 23, 2008, newly elected Dr. Rambaran Yadav took the oath of office from the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal at the Rastrapati Bhavan, Kathmandu. After taking the oath, he took the salute presented by the Nepali Army and then went to see his office and sat on the chair set for him for a few minutes in the office, and said that there was no alternative to all political parties working together on consensus.

The president is the supreme commander of the Nepali Army. He shook hands with the Chief of Army Staff Rukmangad Katuwal. The army chief said that the Nepali Army would do everything to preserve the sovereignty and integrity of Nepal and would not compromise on anything going beyond these two things of national interest.

Thereafter, the president came out and administered the oath of office to the vice-president Permananda Jha. The president read the oath in Nepali language, the vice-president in a different language. It sounds like Hindi but it might be one of those Madheshi languages such as Maithili, Bhojpuri and Avadhi.

After completing the oath-taking and oath-giving ceremony, the president and the vice-president received the congratulations from the ambassadors, representatives and envoys representing various countries in Nepal, and then from the political leaders, outgoing ministers of the current caretaker government and members of the Constituent Assembly.

The oath-taking ceremony ended with the tea party held on the premises of the Rastrapati Bhavan. The government declared Thursday, July 24, 2008 a national holiday for institutionalizing Nepal a Federal Democratic Republic.

The president received congratulatory notes from almost all nations Nepal has diplomatic relations. Thus, the international community has recognized Nepal a Federal Democratic Republic.

Caretaker Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala would formerly tender his resignation to the president on the evening of July 23, 2008 and then the president after consulting with the constitutional experts would ask the concerned leaders to form a new government.
