UNMIN’ Concern Over Its Mandate

Issue 34, August 22, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 20, 2010: in a meeting with top leaders of the major three parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML held at a hotel in Kathmandu, UNMIN Chief Karen Landgren has drawn the attention of the leaders to the last date of its term: September 15, 2010, and has said that the Government of Nepal needs to make a decision on extending or not extending its term at the earliest;

In response to the UNMIN’s concern over the extension of its term, the political leaders have assured her of holding a meeting of all political leaders and making a decision on it as soon as possible.

The NC leaders and some of the CPN-UML have been deadly against the extension of the term of UNMIN, and have even charged the mission with being biased to the UCPN-Maoist. The International community wants the presence of UNMIN in Nepal not to let the country lapse into political chaos and violence again.

UNMIN has been monitoring the peace process and the weapons of the Nepal Army and of the People’s Liberation Army kept at the respective stores since 2006. Landgren has stated that the peace process has been moving very slow and has been incredibly delayed.
