Monarchists’ Attempt To Reinstall Statue Of Birendra
On September 3, 2016, monarchists and common folks fought over the statue of the late Birendra installed while he was still alive at Dhambojhi Chowk in Nepalgunj, and demolished during the people’s movement in 2005, the news on myrepublica.com stated.
The police removed the statue of late King Birendra Shah the monarchists had reinstalled on Thursday in less than 24 hours following tensions between monarchists and common folks, the news stated.
Police said that the Nationalist Youth Cadres replaced the late king's statue at the Dhambojhi Chowk informing the police that the group would just set the national flag on the pedestal but they installed the late monarch's statue provoking the common folks.
“Some political parties in the district expressed discontent with the installation of the statue. We removed the statue as the decision was not taken by the government,” said Banke's Chief District Officer Mr. Rabil Lal Pant, according to the news on myrepublica.com.
Clashes between police personnel and monarchists had ensued after police forcefully removed the statue. CDO Pant said police had arrested 10 cadres of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (PPP) after they started pelting stones on the police. Security personnel have been deployed in the Dhamboji Chowk area to prevent any untoward incidents, Pant informed.
