December 22, 2013: the FIFA World Cup Trophy landed in Kathmandu yesterday for the first time for the joyful celebrations, according to the Xinhua news.
The delighted fans stood in line for more than an hour at the national stadium to enter and see the trophy kept there for display, just to get a glimpse of the world's most coveted trophy and to shot a picture of it even from a certain distance.
"It is a dream come true for us to see the trophy here in Kathmandu. We have waited for hours but it is worth it," said Ananta Shrestha, a fan waited for hours at the stadium.
President Dr Ram Baran Yadav held the trophy in his hand following the FIFA's rule that the trophy be allowed only to be touched by the head of the state or the winning team member of the World Cup.
"We are very happy to host the trophy in our nation. I think it is a tipping point in the history of the country. We had the elections and now we have the world's most coveted trophy here in Kathmandu. I would like to request the organizer to make Nepal as part of the tour every time so that more fans will be able to witness the trophy," said President Dr Yadav.
The trophy arrived from Bhutan at 2 p.m., local time, and will be traveling to India today. It had started its journey from Brazil in September 2012. The trophy marks the ultimate symbol of happiness, optimism, inclusiveness, diversity, collaboration and commitment. We hope that this trophy here today will act as a fuel to create healthy active life style commitment in every community not only in Kathmandu but across Nepal," said Neeraj Garg, vice president of Coca Cola South Asian region.
