Celebrating New Year Following Nepal Samvat

Issue 43, October 25, 2009

By Kathmandu Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On October 18, 2009, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has garlanded the statue of Shankhadhara Sakhvah in Thimi, Bhaktapur at the function to celebrate the New Year eve following the Nepal Samvat. Speaking at the function, the Prime Minister has said that the son of Nepal has introduced Nepal Samvat; it is a pride for all Nepalis. Sakhvah paid debts of all citizenry and introduced the Nepal Samvat in 880.

On October 19, 2009, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal held a tea party at his official residence to mark the New Year following the Nepal Samvat, and to celebrate Depavali and Chhath festivals.

The government of Nepal has declared Shankhadhara Sakhvah a national public figure and the Nepal Samvat a national calendar.

On October 19, 2009, Nepalis particularly the Nevah community all over Nepal have celebrated the New Year following the Nepal Samvat.

Logically thinking Nepalis are for replacing the current Vikram calendar in use with the Gregorian calendar for all practical purposes, and continue to use the Nepal Samvat for the religious and cultural celebrations.
