Nepal sticks to One-China Policy

Issue 11, March 16, 2008

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On March 12, 2008, in a statement the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Nepal said, “The Government of Nepal has consistently followed the principled stand on 'One-China policy’ and is firmly committed to upholding this principle; Nepal wants to reiterate its position once again that the People's Republic of China is the sole and legitimate representative of China. So, it firmly opposes the 'proposed referendum' on joining the United Nations under the name of Taiwan and holds the views that it is an act of destabilization across Taiwan Straits” according to the state-owned newspaper “The Rising Nepal” of March 12, 2008. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ statement states, 'It believes that such an attempt by the Taiwan Authorities under any name or by any means would only lead to tension in the region.'
