Indian External Affairs Minister Visiting Nepal
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On December 21, 2009, the Press Trust of India (PTI) has reported that Indian External Minister S M Krishna is traveling to Nepal on January 15, 2010 for discussing the status of the peace process and writing of a new constitution with the Nepalese political leaders; at the same time, both sides will review the bilateral relations.
The peace process and writing of a new constitution have been in trouble after the President has unconstitutionally written a letter to the army chief. The rewriting of the Constitution needs to complete by May 2010. The main opposition UCPN-Maoist has been putting pressure on the political leaders for correcting the unconstitutional act of the President.
On December 20, 2009, Telegraphindia.com has written that the visit of the Indian Foreign Minister to Nepal is more for neutralizing the growing Chinese influence in Nepal, as it has been an irritant to the Indian leaders. Nepalese Prime Minister Madhav Nepal is visiting China. China has promised to provide Nepal with Rs 220 million for modernizing Nepal Army.
Telegraphindia.com has quoted a former diplomat, “We in India have overplayed the Chinese factor. There is a strong sentiment in Nepal that India is responsible for outflanking the Maoists and for their exit from the government earlier this year. We need to look at this in isolation, not connect everything that goes wrong for us in Nepal to China. The challenge is to project India as a friend, not the big brother which manipulates their democratic process.”
