NEA Employees Cut Off Power Supply To Ministers' Residence

Issue 24, June 16, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

June 10, 2013: employees of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) protesting against the recent contract on the Trishuli 3 ‘A’ hydropower project cut off the power supply to ministerial residences at Pulchowk yesterday. Three Employees Unions of the NEA have launched the protest against the NEA's decision on upgrading the capacity of the project from 60 MW to 90 MW, according to gorkhapatraonline.com.

The employees have warned of cutting off the power supply for the whole day from Wednesday if the government were not to withdraw its decision on upgrading the capacity of the Upper Trishuli 3 ‘A’.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of Nepalese Professionals (CONEP) expressed solidarity with the protesting NEA unions. The four employees’ unions included NEA Employees Association, NEA Employees Union, NEA Employees Council and Nepal National Employees Association.

According to a press statement issued by CONEP, the decision of the NEA on upgrading the capacity of the under construction project was a sheer violation of the public procurement. The decision would increase the cost of the project while delaying the construction work of the project, the CONEP said. The CONEP asked the concerned authorities to withdraw the decision at the earliest possible.

The CONEP said that it would compel to take the issue to the streets together with the NEA unions if the NEA were not to withdraw the decision as per the request of the agitating groups.

NEA with China Gezhouba Group Company Limited as contractor is developing a run-off-the-river Upper Trishuli 3 ‘A’.

Earlier, former finance and energy ministers jointly submitted a memorandum to Chairman of Interim Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi asking him to revoke the decision.
