Issue 44, November 3, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 1, 2013: Nepalis have started off celebrating the five-day festival called ‘tihar’ or ‘svonti’ or ‘dipavali’ today making offerings to a bird ‘crow’ believed to be the messenger of the god of death called Yamaraj. Tomorrow is the day of dog believed to be the gatekeeper of Yamaraj in the world of dead. The third day is the day of cow believed to be the goddess of wealth. The fourth day is for the body worship for some folks and for others the day for worshipping ox. The last day of festival is reserved for the brother worship.

Nepalis spend millions of rupees on buying flowers for decorating windows and doors, and another millions of rupees on illuminating their homes during the night.

Unlike the festival of Dasain, no animal sacrifice is done rather revere the animals. The festival of lights and flowers celebrated at the heels of the Dasain festival is the most wonderful festival in Nepal.
