Issue 20, May 13, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 6, 2012: the whole Buddhist world including the world body called United Nations celebrated the 2556th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha today. The United Nations has been celebrating the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha making this day a public holiday for the staffs of this world body since 2002.

On this day, 2556 years ago Lord Buddha was born to Queen Mayadevi in the forest of today’s Lumbini: southern Nepal while she was on the way back home to her husband. Buddha was born as Siddhartha Gautam: son of King Sudodhan. At the age of 31 years, Siddhartha left the palace, his infant son called Rahul and his beautiful wife Asodha to find out the reasons for human sufferings. After five years of extensive studies, he got enlightenment.

This day is the public holiday in Nepal. Monks and priests perform various Buddha puja although Buddha was against such rites and rituals, and wanted everyone following him to meditate to cleanse his/her mind.

Buddha’s main message to the people willing to live in peace is not to harm anybody, if you do you cannot escape from the punishment naturally come to you, no matter what merit-earning rites you perform to offset the sin you have committed.
