Kamaiyas for their Proportional Representation in CA

Issue 40, October 07, 2007

BY KTM Metro Reporter

The state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’ ran the news that the central committee of liberated Kamaiyas’ society held awareness rallies in Bardiya, Kanchanpur, Tikapur, Lamki, Attariya and Banke district of far western Nepal for several days, and held a concluding rally on September 30, 2007. Speaking at the closing function at the local open theatre, chairman of the society, Pashupati Chaudhari said proportional representation of liberated Kamaiyas in the CA polls should be ensured. Liberated Kamaiyas of five districts participated in the rally.

Kamaiyas were the bonded laborers. They were bonded from generation to generation. Only after the people’s movement against the monarchy liberated them from the bondage and became free again.
