Eradicating Illiteracy In Two Years

Issue 36, September 8, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 6, 2013: speaking at the interaction held by the Education Journalists’ Network in Kathmandu yesterday, Minister for Education Madhav Prasad Poudel said that the illiteracy would be eradicated from Nepal within two years; he also said that the parents not sending their children to school would be deprived of the benefits provided by the State, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.

The minister also said that the government was going to introduce free and compulsory education in 13 districts as an experiment; this would be gradually extended to other districts, too; to this end, the government was formulating laws.

However, experts in education and non-formal education say that if someone says that Nepal can eradicate illiteracy within two years then s/he dose not know the real situation of illiteracy in the country or s/he must be lying. Not only huge resources in terms of human and money are required but also time to educate the illiterate people in Nepal. It will not be done in two years or even two decades.
