March 31, 2013: former US President Jimmy Carter called on Chairman of Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi at the latter’s residence yesterday. President Carter has been happy with the formation of the Interim Election Council following the consensus of the major political parties but he has been very concerned with the means to hold the elections to a new CA, the voters’ lists, and with the ways of tackling with the opposing political parties, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.

Chairman of IEC Khil Raj Regmi in turn said that he was determined to hold elections impartially as scheduled; to this end, his government had set up a committee to talk to the opposing political parties to bring them to participate in the elections; the high-level political committee also has been making efforts on bringing the opposition political parties to participate in the elections.

Chairman Regmi also told President Carter that the only alternative to break the political deadlock was the elections; to this end, the IEC was set up; IEC would perform its duty and give a new direction to the country.

Chairman Regmi also said that the government would grant permission to the Carter Center in Nepal for the election observer following the request of President Carter. Chairman Regmi appreciated the contribution of the Carter Center in Nepal made to the previous elections.
