Enforce The Provision Made in Budget

Issue 49, December 05, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 29, 2010: representatives of the gold and silver dealers have met with officiating Minister for Commerce and Supplies Rajendra Mahato and Secretary to Ministry of Commerce Purushottam Ojha and have demanded the government ease the supply constraints of gold in the domestic market either lifting the ban on the import of gold following the provision made by the Minister for Finance in the budget for the fiscal year 2010 or making an alternative arrangement immediately, myrepublica.com writes.

The concern of the officiating minister has been that the balance of payment will deteriorate if the import of gold is allowed. The Central Bank of Nepal called Nepal Rastra Bank has sold gold to the highest bidders through the public auctions several times during the last few months.

The government headed by Madhav Nepal usually does not follow the rule of law. So, it is not surprising that the officiating Commerce Minister is reluctant to lift the embargo on importing gold even though the Appropriation Bill has been enacted through the presidential order. It has been urgently needed for making the law enforcement people not enforcing law is a criminal act.
