By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

December 13, 2009: The Nepal Army says that the army has taken Major Niranjan Basnet in custody on Saturday, December 12, 2009 accused of involved in the killing of Maina Sunar. The Kavre District court has ordered the government to arrest him on the murder charge on January 31, 2008 but the government has instead sent him to the UN Peacekeeping mission in Chad. After finding Major Niranjan Basnet was involved in killing a girl, the UN has fired him from the job and escorted him to Nepal so that he would not escaped from arrest. International Human Rights Organizations and Amnesty International have put pressure on the UN to force the major out of the job and escort him to Nepal so that he might not escape from arrest.

Sending Major Niranjan Basnet a culprit to the UN peacekeeping mission, the Nepal Army and the government have shown their actual character of saving the Nepal Army personnel from getting punishment for their criminal activities. However, the Prime Minister commits to give a top priority to ending the impunity.

The Nepalese private media have reported that the Prime Minister in consultation with the Defense Minister and the Home Minister has asked the Nepal Army to turn over Major Niranjan Basnet to the Nepal police.
