Maoists for presidential system but power with legislature
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On June 18, 2009, the politburo meeting of Unified CPN-Maoist has deliberated on different aspects of a new constitution. After a long deliberation, most of the members have opted for directly electing an executive president responsible to the legislature. They have been concerned with check and balance of power between a president and legislature, as a directly elected president may turn into an authoritarian. So, politburo members have preferred to consolidate power in a legislature and make a president responsible to it. The politburo members have also deliberated on a number and structure of federal units and autonomous regions, election systems, judiciary and appointment of judges, power of legislature and constitutional bodies.
