Not Trading Democracy For Office Of Prime Minister

Issue 51, December 16, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 10, 2012: the Central Working Committee (CWC) of NC has decided that the NC would not trade its democracy with the ruling coalition for the office of prime minister in other words the NC leaders are not willing to back track from their stand on no to a package deal with the ruling coalition of the UCPN-Maoist and the UDMF.

However, NC leaders have not defined their democracy. Whether their democracy is to put pressure on the head of state to fire the current government, and then pick up one of them to the office of prime minister, as NC leader Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat had urged the head of state speaking at the annual general meeting of the Safal Savings and Credit Cooperatives Limited in Nuwakot on Saturday, December 8, 2012.

The package deal is for reaching a consensus on various contentious issues concerning a new constitution, setting the date for elections to a new CA, removing legal hurdles to holding the elections, and forming a consensus unity government. Some of the UDMF leaders have said in public that they would not support the NC candidate for a new prime minister of a unity government if they were not agreeing on a package deal.

Speaking at a press conference held in Gaindakot today, Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai’s chief press advisor Devendra Poudel said that Prime Minister Dr Bhattarai would not quit the office without the political parties reaching a package deal. Press Advisor Poudel also the UCPN-Maoist politburo member said that his party was committed to resolving current problems of the country, according to the state-run news agency RSS.

The Prime Minister would be compelled to expand the Cabinet to reduce his workload if the consensus were not possible within the deadline set by the President, as the Prime Minister himself has been taking the charge of many ministries in the absence of the ministers, the RSS quoted the PM's press advisor as saying.

On Saturday, December 8, 2012, while talking to reporters at the Biratnagar Airport, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal said that they (NC and CPN-UML) would create an environment to form a new government removing the current government through the street protest, as there was a little chance of reaching a political consensus, according to the RSS news.

Chairman Khanal ruled out the possibility of reaching a consensus among the political parties during the time period the President set for the third time to form a consensus government, so, there was no alternative to the street protests against the ruling parties, as the formation of a national consensus government was the only way to break the current political deadlock.

The Supreme Court has issued a show cause notice to the Office of the President asking it to furnish reasons for not accepting a nomination made by 12 political parties for the office of Prime Minister. The notice comes a few days after 12 fringe political parties registered at the Election Commission, filed an application at the President's Office recommending their candidate to lead a government of a national consensus but the president not responding them, writes nepalnews.com.
