Finding Out Ancient Kapilvastu Palace Located In Tilaurakot

January 24, 2011: speaking at a function held at the district headquarters in Taulihawa to announce the initiation of excavation works at the archaeological sites at Tilaurakot in Kapilvastu, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Representative and Professor of Durban University, United Kingdom, Ravines Cunningham has said on January 23, 2011 that UNESCO has decided to excavate the ancient Kapilvastu Palace located in Tilaurakot according to ‘The Rising Nepal’ of January 24, 2011. Lumbini Development Trust and Department of Archeology will lead the excavation works. Such an excavation will be held at major sites and the western part of the palace starting in July 2011 and ending in 2015. The excavation will be for finding the palace of King Sudhodhana of the Shakya Kingdom after finding the east and west gates of the historic Shakya palace; Professor Cunningham has assured of the excavation of Tilaurakot will bring the Shakya palace into limelight, and will enhance the prospect of tourism in this area.

In 1899, Indian archaeologist P. C. Mukherji carried out excavation works and discovered Tilaurakot. Thereafter, Indian archaeological scholar Devala had also carried out an excavation work in Tilaurakot in 1962, a joint team of Risho University of Japan and Department of Archaeology from 1967 to 1977, and the government of Nepal from 1970 to 1988 bringing the current status of the area.
