Absconding Lawmakers

August 5, 2017

Kathmandu: any lawmaker having registered her/his attendance at the parliamentary secretariat is entitled to receive NPR 1,000 as a daily allowance on top of the regular salary and other allowances the law has made provision for. Lawmakers surely know that they get those allowances and salaries from the taxpayers’ money for the good work they do.

If they put the signatures in an attendance book, and don’t continue to be in the parliament means actually they must have hurriedly come to the parliament and punch their names and then abscond without trace for a day. Where they go only they know.

On Friday, August 4, 2017, a number of bills are to pass; the presence of lawmakers is necessary to do so. The attendance book has shown that 477 lawmaker have signed off but when the time has come to pass the bill, and Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar checked to see the quorum for passing the bills she found only 97 lawmakers were present means 380 lawmakers absconded, the news in the front page of “gorkhapatra” today stated. What a shame on such lawmakers only they know it.
