Bridge Collapsed in Nepal

Issue 52, December 30, 2007

On December 25, 2007, Nepalis celebrating the local festival were crossing the suspension bridge over the Bheri River in mid-western Nepal. Some curious people were watching the revelers of the festival standing on the bridge making the suspension bridge crowded with the people. Probably, the human load became more than what the suspension bridge could take. One of the pillars supporting the bridge collapsed causing the people crossing on the bridge fall into the icy river.

The Nepali Army, the police and the Maoists’ militia have been working on rescuing the people. So far, sixteen people including four children were confirmed dead, and more than one hundred people were still missing. About one hundred injured were undergoing treatment at the Bheri Hospital in Surkhet.

The Government of Nepal formed a high-level technical committee to probe into the incident of the collapse of a suspension bridge over the Bheri River at Shuvaghat in Surkhet. The government also announced to provide the family of each person killed and injured with Rs 25, 000 (US$ 400) for immediate relief.
