Chairman Of UCPN-Maoist Request UN for Extending Its Term In Nepal

Issue 01, January 02, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 31, 2010: Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has sent a letter to the United Nations through Chief of UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) Ms. Karin Landgren requesting for extending the term of UNMIN until May 28, 2011, stating the presence of UNMIN is necessary to complete the peace process, nepalnews.com writes.

In a meeting with the Chief of UNMIN on Thursday, December 29, 2010, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist has presented the letter to the UN to Ms Karin Landgren for hand-carrying the letter to the UN during her visit to New York to brief the Security Council on the peace process in Nepal. She is leaving Nepal on Saturday, December 31, 2010.

The coalition government headed by Madhav Nepal and other political leaders particularly of NC and CPN-UML have been deadly against extending the term of the UNMIN in Nepal. However, they have been extending the term of UNMIN under the pressure of the international community. This time, the international community is not putting any pressure on the government to extend the term of UNMIN; and the UN Security Council has decided that it is not going to extend the term of UNMIN, as the peace process has been never ending process because of the leaders not breaking the political deadlock refusing to compromise with each other on the major political issues.

The term of UNMIN is expiring on January 15, 2011 and UN Secretary-General Ban ki-moon has appointed Ms. Karin Landgren, current Chief of UNMIN to the UN Mission in Africa.
