Largest Football Event In Nepal

March 9, 2012: Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai opened the AFC Challenge Cup held at Dasarath Stadium in Kathmandu yesterday; it is the largest football event ever held in Nepal; International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) President Joseph Sepp Blatter has participated in the function. Top leaders of three major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML also were there to watch the opening ceremony of the AFC Challenge Cup.
President of FIFA Joseph S. Blatter has yesterday met with President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai separately at the residence of the president and the prime minister respectively and has talked about development of football in Nepal, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.
All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) jointly with Saathi: a non-governmental organization working against the abuses of women in Nepal, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has held this football event opening it on the International Women’s Day for using the tournament as the platform to campaign against the domestic violence of women in Nepal.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the AFC Challenge Cup, Acting President of AFC Zhang Jilong also has said that he anticipates a good team winning the AFC Challenge Cup will qualify for the Asia Cup 2015 in Australia.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the AFC Challenge Cup, ANFA President Ganesh Thapa has said that the AFC Challenge Cup is the most memorable event in the football history of Nepal; initially some doubts were there about the holding of the event but today AFC Challenge Cup is the reality. He also has appreciated the presence of the FIFA President and AFC President.
According to the news posted on fifa.com, Blatter met with President Dr Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai. The Nepali President said he was happy to receive Blatter and his delegation and publicly declared a sincere appreciation of his efforts at FIFA.
“The contribution that you have given to world football for over three decades at FIFA is really remarkable,” Dr Yadav told Blatter in a meeting at Shital Niwas. “Your intention to bring football to under-privileged country is also noteworthy,” added the President.
After a ten-minute meeting with the Prime Minister in Baluwatar, Blatter said he was happy to be in Nepal following an overwhelming reception. “I am absolutely revitalized after being so warmly received,” commented President Blatter. “It was a fantastic Nepali welcome.”
It was then time to move to the Dasharath Stadium for the opening of the AFC Challenge Cup, the biggest football event that Nepal has witnessed. The FIFA President commented that it was a big day for Nepali football. “To host the AFC Challenge Cup is a huge achievement for this country,” he said, while Nepal’s Prime Minister turned to Blatter, commenting; “Your visit will promote the sport here.”
In the FIFA President’s inauguration speech coincidently on the International Women’s Day, he affirmed FIFA's commitment to supporting and developing the women's game in Nepal and stated the parallels between football and supporting women's rights in that both are about fair play, respect and discipline.
