Rice Day Today In Nepal

Issue 26, June 30, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

June 29, 2013: Nepal is celebrating the Rice Day today. The Government of Nepal had declared Asar 15 (June 29, 2013) the Rice Day. The Ministry of Agriculture and some farmers are marking this day with various programs. UN had declared a Rice Day in 2004.

Traditionally, Nepalis celebrate Asar 15 as the day of the rice seedling transplantation day. Nepalis believe that on this day they should at least step in the field prepared for the rice transplantation. Men and women play with mud. They throw mud at each other in the field. Thereafter, they eat flattened rice with yogurt.

Nepal has not been able to increase the productivity of rice in particular and other food crops in general despite the heavy investment of the Nepalese government and the donor agencies in the agriculture due to the faulty agricultural policy of the government. Farmers have no incentive to invest in the farming, as they have to share the crops with the landowners. In addition, they don’t have the irrigation, and other agricultural inputs at the time of rice seedling transplantation.
