August 2, 2017

Kathmandu: The Election Commission has decided to hold the re-polling at Ward Number 19 of the Bharatpur Metropolitan City in the Chitwan district on Friday, August 4, 2017 after the Supreme Court’s ruling on the case of tearing off the ballot papers by the representatives of the Maoist-Center candidate for the mayor of the metro city. The ruling was to hold re-election.

The counting of votes of the second-phase election held on May 14, 2017 was suspended after the representatives of the candidate torn off some ballot papers while counting was going on, on May 28 night leading to the decision of the EC to hold re-election but an advocate has filed a case against the decision of the EC at the Supreme Court demanding the continuation of the counting of votes ignoring the 90 ballot papers totally torn off.

The CPN-UML candidate had been leading by almost 2,000 votes. He has a good chance of winning the election. The CPN-UML has publicly stated the ruling of the Supreme Court on holding the re-election was unfortunate.
