Kathmandu: After two-and-a-half months, the re-election was held at ward 19 of Bharatpur Metropolitan City on Friday, August 5, 2017, Renu Dahal got elected to the mayor of the metropolitan city on August 5, 2017. She defeated her nearest rival and candidate of CPN-UML by 203 votes. The coalition partner and candidate of NC Parbati Shah Thakuri also got elected to the deputy mayor of the metropolitan city.
An election alliance between NC and Maoist-Center had been formed for the election in Bharatpur Metro City. So, Maoist Renu Dahal became the candidate for the mayor while NC cadre Parbati Shah Thakuri for the deputy mayor.
Following the alliance, NC and Maoist voters have to vote for both the candidates. However, Dahal received slightly more than 42 thousands votes while her deputy Thakuri received more than 47 thousands making 4,000 votes short for Dahal.
Dahal and Thakuri had to wait for two-and-a-half months, as the representatives of Dahal torn off some votes while counting the votes of ward 19; and the Election Commission declared the re-election in ward 19. An advocate filed a petition at the Supreme Court demanding to repeal the decision of the Election Commission. The ruling of the Supreme Court went in favor of the Election Commission, and then the re-election was held on Friday, August 4, 2017.
Newly elected mayor of Bharatpur Metro City Renu Dahal is the daughter of Chairman of Maoist–Center Prachanda.
