India Dishonors Promise made to Nepalese Farmers

Issue 28, July 28, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Few weeks ago, the Indian authorities had agreed to provide 300 cubic centimeters of water from the Gandak canal after the protest of the Nepalese farmers. According to the agreement between Nepal and India, Nepalese farmers should receive 300 cubic centimeters of water but India has been releasing only 104 cubic centimeters. India has been drawing 36,000 cubic centimeters of water from the east and west Gandak canals in Nepal to irrigate farmlands in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar according to ‘The Rising Nepal’ of July 07, 2008. Nepalese farmers have not been able to transplant rice seedlings due to the lack of water. Gandak Canal Agitation Committee Secretary Prem Chandra Gupta said that the Indian officials were deceiving the Nepalese farmers stating that the water level in the canal was lower than the required level. Gupta said that the Indian government has been reaping huge benefits from the water it has been diverting through the canal via Nepalese territory; however, the fertile land in Nawalparasi of the Nepalese territory has been denied irrigation water.
