Food Grain Scandal In India

Issue 50, December 12, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 7, 2010: after the corruption scandals involving the minister in the cellular phone deal and of the Commonwealth Games case, India has another food scandal involving Rs 350 billions.

The top officials of the state and the central government have colluded to funnel the Rs 350 billion worth of food grain meant for public distribution to other Indian states, and other countries such as Bangladesh and Nepal between 2001 and 2007. The State Government of UP has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the food scandal on December 01, 2007 according to various news reports coming from India.

The Central government agency has procured the food grain for the state government, which is supposed to distribute the food grain to the poor of at least 31 districts of UP either free of cost or at highly subsidized rates. However, the corrupt officials of both the State Government and Central Government have managed to sell the food grain to other states and other countries, too, falsifying documents.
