Manmohan Singh’s Government Stood
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On July 22, 2008, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government won the vote of confidence winning 275 votes against 256 for opposition. Just before the voting was to be held some opposition members of parliament came in waiving the bundles of banknotes allegedly given to the opposition members for abstaining the voting. The opposition members of parliament accused the government of attempting to bribe the opposition members. The ruling members of parliament said it was staged-managed scenario to disturb the voting, and demanded to arrest the members receiving such bundles of banknotes. However, it did not affect the voting.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has had to ask for the vote of confidence after the left-party members of parliament took back the support for his government in protest of the controversial nuclear deal with the USA.
