Protest Against Rs 20 Millions Allocated To Everest Climbing Team

Issue 12, March 18, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 17, 2012: the government of Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has provided the Everest Climbing Team called “Lumbini-Sagarmatha Expedition” reportedly headed by Prakash Dahal: the son of UCPN-Maoist Chairmen Prachanda with Rs 20 millions.

It is not unusual that any government provides any team with some money to support the tourism industry but the strangest thing is the students’ and youths’ organizations affiliated to the NC and CPN-UML have threatened to launch a protest if the government did not roll back the decision on giving the money to the “Lumbini-Sagarmatha Expedition” team within 24 hours. They have already blocked the roads in Kathmandu to launch an initial protest.

Certainly, these youth organizations have rights to protest any government decisions but they need to do it in the legal manner than using their young muscle power to bully not only the government but also the common folks on the streets. They could go to the Supreme Court of Nepal pleading the apex court for annulling the government decision on this matter; they also could go to the anti-right-abuse agency called Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) requesting to take a look into this matter. However, they should never take this issue to the streets and stop the business of the common folks, as this goes against the democratic norms and values and the rule of law.

If these guys are acting on the order of the political masters then it is deadly disastrous to them and their organizations because the so-called leaders are using the muscle power of Nepalese youths wrongly for serving their interest in grabbing the power. Certainly, these political guys are for toppling the current government by any means.

In the recent past, political leaders have used the youth power for getting the state-job contracts to their favorites for earning commissions causing the rival groups of the NC and CPN-UML fight against each other for getting the job contracts. Recently, the youth organization of the CPN-UML killed the Chitwan youth leader of the NC. If the media reports were to believe they were fighting against each other for the state-job contracts and both parties landed in the Chitwan jail where they again fought and got killed. The strangest thing was that the NC leaders demanded the government to declare the killed youth allegedly murderer a martyr and pay Rs 1 million to his family as the compensation for the loss of the loved one. Paying compensation for the loss might be right thing to do but declaring such a person a martyr would go against the ethic of doing such thing.
