Save the King Campaign

Issue 06, February 10, 2008

By KTM Reporter in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, Jan. 08: As the election for a constituent assembly is drawing nearer and nearer every passing day, the supporters of the king and the king, too have been nervous. It is sure that the first session of the constituent assembly will end the monarchy. So, the supporters of the king have been trying to disrupt the election for a constituent assembly using every possible trick. The king also has started talking to the local and foreign reporters about the political situation in Nepal.

The supporters of the king calling for making Nepal a Hindu state have held a rally in Birgunj a few days ago. They burnt tires on the streets for stopping vehicular movement. Some Hindu fanatics also went around Kathmandu on vehicles calling for reinstating a Hindu state. This was the old trick the former king Mahendra used to topple the elected government of the Nepali Congress in 1960.

Minister without Portfolio Sujata Koirala has been instigating violence to disrupt the election for a constituent assembly for saving the monarchy. She has been sending the security forces through the Minister of State for Home to seal off the offices of the Young Communist League (YCL) in Kathmandu. This has almost erupted into violence on the night of February 06, 2008.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) Madhav Kumar Nepal welcomed the government’s sealing of the YCL’s offices in Kathmandu as the actions against the incident of injuring the Nepali Congress leader Dilendra Badhu in the far western area called Darchula. How could he justify the actions against the YCL in Kathmandu for the criminal acts in Darchula? So, General Secretary Nepal was for provoking violence that could certainly dislodge the election for a constituent assembly. So, he is unwittingly supporting the king.

The Communist Party of Nepal – Maoist (CPN-Maoist) also has been tending to go against the election for a constituent assembly allowing the YCL to disrupt the election campaign of other political parties elsewhere in the areas they have a hold. Activating the United Revolutionary People’s Council, the CPN-Maoist has created a controversy over it among the politicians at the time when everything should be focused on smoothly holding an election for a constituent assembly. The Maoists’ leaders should understand that all these things go in favor of the king, as these things would help to upset the election for a constituent assembly.

After the interview given to Hari Lampsal and published in the Nepali language newspaper called ‘Rastra Bani’, suspended king Gyanendra gave another interview this time to a Japanese newspaper, and attempted to justify his previous actions, called the current coalition government of the seven-party alliance incompetent and all the actions of the seven-party alliance undemocratic. This is again the old trick his father Mahendra used to take over the power from the elected government in 1960.
