March 15, 2011: the central bank of Nepal called Nepal Rastra Bank has asked the Nepalis to exchange the bank notes with the portraits of former kings with new bank notes for removing the remnants of the monarchy in Nepal. The last deadline for exchanging the banknotes is mid March 2011.

The central bank estimates that about 10 billion rupees with the portraits of kings are still in circulation. Confusing information given by the central bank has caused long lines of people at banks for exchanging their banknotes today. The central bank has said that after the mid March, only a few counters will be opened at banks for exchanging the old banknotes with the new ones but the people thought that from today the banknotes with the portraits would be demonetized.
