Extending Term Of Constituent Assembly

Issue 14, April 01, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 26, 2012: Speaking at an interaction event held in Kathmandu today afternoon, Chairman of Constitutional Committee responsible for drafting a new constitution Nilambar Acharya has said that his hope is the Supreme Court of Nepal would reverse its ruling on extending the term of the Constituent Assembly for the last time and let it have its term extended again for completing the peace process and the constitution writing, ‘THT ONLINE’ reports today.

On the coming Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Nepal is holding hearings on the appeal filed by the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly for reviewing its ruling on ‘giving the Constituent Assembly the last chance of extending its term’ possibly paving the way for extending the term of Constituent Assembly again.

Almost all politicians except for the prime minister of course agree on the need for extending the term of the Constituent Assembly, as the promulgation of a new constitution by the deadline of May 27, 2012 has been impossible. However, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai continues to tell the people at the public events a new constitution is still possible by May 27, 2012. Maybe, the prime minister has a magic wand to promulgate a new constitution before or on May 27, 2012.

Lawmaker Dr. Prakash Prachandra Lohani has once said that leaders of three major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML disagree on everything but agree on one thing: extending the term of the Constituent Assembly.

Some politicians want a fresh mandate from the people but most of them are not for the fresh elections. However, recently, NC senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba stepping on the footprints of Chairman of Rastriya Prajatantra Paty–Nepal (RPP-Nepal) Kamal Thapa has said that he also is for fresh elections, as the possibility of a new constitution by the deadline of May 27, 2012 has been almost non-existence. Mr. Deuba also has proposed to introduce the Constitution of Nepal of 1990 with some cuts and pastes.

Judging from what they say in public, most of the Nepalese politicians need a psychiatric treatment that also not in Nepal but in foreign countries.
