Protest in Bangkok: Red vs Yellow shirts

Issue 15, April 12, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On April 8, 2009, red-shirted people means supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra have started off the protest rally at the home of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s top adviser, Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda who allegedly staged the military coup against the elected government of former Prime Minister Shinawatra.

Then, the military wrote a new constitution and held an election for the parliament. However, to the dismay of the military people, the political party of former Prime Minister Shinawatra won majority seats in the parliament.

Then, yellow-shirted people means the followers of the Thai King staged rallies against the democratically elected government and even seized the Thai airport for a week forcing the democratically elected government out of office in December 2008.

Former Prime Minister Shinawatra enjoys the support of the urban and rural poor against his foes in the military and bureaucracy. So, the power struggle would continue between the pro-people and the pro-elitist politicians.

The red-shirted protestors are demanding a fresh election for the parliament.
