Rs 2.30 billion Subsidy On Fertilizers

Issue 36, June 27, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

June 23, 2010: the Ministry of Finance has been thinking to allocate Rs 2.30 billion for providing subsidy on fertilizers in the coming fiscal year 2010. The international community had consistently lobbied the previous governments to finish off the subsidy on fertilizers as such subsidy did not work in the interest of the needy farmers but of the government officials and ministers in the past. However, the Madhav government has reinstated the subsidy on fertilizer in the last fiscal year wasting the billions of the taxpayers’ money. Thus, the Madhav government is not accountable to the people.

The government has monopoly on buying and selling fertilizers. However, the government has not been able to provide the farmers with the fertilizers on time during the plantation period. Farmers have had to buy fertilizers at the parallel market.
