Drought in Nepal

Issue 30, July 26, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On July 23, 2009, the state-run Radio Nepal in its morning news has stated that farmers have been able to transplant rice-seedlings in the only one-third of the cultivable land in Taria, and farmers in Kathmandu have been unable to transplant rice-seedlings in the land where irrigation is not available.

Weather specialists say that we have still one and a half months of the monsoon. So, Tarai farmers may be able to transplant rice-seedlings; however, there is no chance of rains coming to Nepal for the next four days.

Nepalese farmers in Tarai have used every possible technique of causing rains. Women farmers have danced nude at night to appease the rain-god called Indra for causing rains. Some farmers have performed the marriage of frogs believing it brings rains.

Some concerned officials of the Ministry of Agriculture have already predicted that the food grain production in Nepal will be considerably reduced in this year.
