Kathmandu: Forty one percent of women and 58 percent of men, and the remaining one percent third gender were elected to local unit offices in the second-phase local elections held on June 30, according to the news in “gorkhapatra” of today.

Women got elected to 315 positions of Deputy Mayors of municipalities and Vice-chairpersons of village councils out of 334 positions means more than 94 percent women won the second positions at the local units; however, only one woman got elected to the mayor of a municipality out of 119 positions, and only three women won the positions of chairpersons of village councils out of 215 positions, and only 25 women won the positions of the ward chairpersons, and out of 2,873 positions, and 2,873 women got elected to members of local units while 2,849 dalit women got elected to the members, the news stated.

As such women got elected to primarily the second positions. However, anybody could judge from the data of the second-phase-election results that women in general and dalit women in particular have a large presence at the local units. This representation of women must change the status of women drastically in Nepal in the coming days not even a year. It will be the fuel for the fast socio-economic development in the country.
