Tribhuvan University (TU) shut indefinitely on January 1, 2009 after the locals vandalized the offices demanding the compensation for the land the government had taken for the University in 1950s opened on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 after the government assured the TU administration of their security.

Closing the university for an indefinite period for the security reason, the TU administration has not only set the wrong precedent but also showed its inability to resolve the problems. So, the officials of the TU administration have no rights to stay on the positions if they have no capability of solving the problems.

On January 20, 2009, the Indopia.In reported that the two Chinese companies won the contract for constructing a 26.5 km tunnel for carrying water from the Melamchi River to the Kathmandu Valley. Cost of the construction of the tunnel is estimated at US$ 50 million and the construction is anticipated to complete in 4-5 years. The major donor is Asian Development Bank and the total cost of the project is US$ 350 million. The Chinese companies winning the contract are China Railway 15- Bureau Group Corporation and China CMIIC Engineering Corporation.

On January 21, 2009, Himalmedia Private reinstated the 18 staffers sacked last month, and there was a scandal of vandalizing the Himalmdia House and even beating some staffs. The Executive Editor of Himal Khabarpatrika magazine, Kiran Nepal welcomed the reinstated staffers at the office garlanding them and applying ‘tika’ on their forehead after the Himalmedia management and Maoist-affiliated All Nepal Trade Union Federation reached an agreement. Citing operational losses, Himalmedia had terminated the jobs of the 18 staffers on Dec 26, 2008. Nepal said that the reinstatement of staffers was a win for both the parties.
