High Altitude Cabinet Meeting In Nepal

Issue 49, December 6, 2009

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Friday, December 4, 2009, the Nepalese cabinet meeting held at Kalapathar situated at 17,192 ft has completed making the ‘Sagarmatha Declaration’ at about 11:00 AM Nepal time. After the meeting for holding a press conference, all 24 ministers including the Prime Minister participating in the meeting and some selected reporters and security personnel are airlifted to Syangboche. Prime Minister’s spouse ‘Gayatri’ accompanied her husband. Prime Minister briefed the reporters at Syangboche on the decisions made by the high altitude cabinet meeting and ended the press conference thereafter.

All ministers have carried oxygen bottles and masks and some of them have worn the oxygen masks at the cabinet meeting held at 17,192 ft in view of the 50% less oxygen content in the air at this altitude. Physicians have checked the oxygen contents in the blood of all ministers at Syangaboche before they were airlifted to Kalapathar at 17,192 ft. The required minimum oxygen content in the blood of the ministers is 80%. However, for safety reason, each minister has a mask and oxygen bottle with him/her.

It has been a great publicity of the high altitude cabinet meeting and a festival for the local people and the visitors. It has been a great picnic and a helicopter ride for all the 110-member team of the high altitude cabinet meeting. They have kept four helicopters and one plane standby in case of the need for flying out of the area. However, some members of the team have to remain at Syangboche, as only selected members were airlifted to Kalapathar at 17,192 ft.

How much it influences the decision makers on climate change remains to be seen. Nepal is the least polluters among the nations of the polluters. So, Nepalis have been the victims of the nations polluting the atmosphere.
