Celebrating Loktantra Day In Nepal

Issue 17, April 25, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

April 24, 2010: today the government of Prime Minister Madhav Nepal is celebrating the ‘Loktantra’ day at Tundikhel in Kathmandu and the ceremonial President and Vice-president that have broken the rule of law also attending the ceremony. I don’t know whether the common folks on the streets care much about it, as the government and the elected officials have not been able to live up to the aspirations of Nepalis in general for the rule of law, peace and prosperity.

The Madhav government has made the mockery of the rule of law. Prime Minister Madhav Nepal follows only the cabinet decision not the rule for anything he does. For example, he has awarded the contract for printing the machine-readable passports to the Indian company bulling the Public Procurement Act of 2006; this is only one of the many major examples of Mr. Nepal has bullied.

Nepalis want peace but the Nepal Army personnel of Defense Minister Bidhya Bhandari have killed innocent and helpless Nepalis in Palpa and Bardiya recently. Ms. Bhandari has shamelessly covered up the criminal acts of her army.

The Nepal Army is for defending our frontiers not for killing innocent Nepalis. The Indian encroachment on the Nepalese territory has continued but the Madhav government has done nothing to stop the Indians from encroaching on the Nepalese land.

The Armed Police Force of Home Minister Bhim Rawal have killed again innocent and helpless people in the name of ejecting them from the forestland in Ataria in the western Nepal. Bhim Rawal openly patted the killer armed policemen.

Thus, the personnel of both the Nepal Army and Nepal Police have been killing innocent Nepalis with impunity having the blessing from their respective boss. The Madhav government has continued to let the Nepal Army and Nepal Police kill innocent and helpless Nepalis with impunity.

Reporters and media owners have been killed on the streets of Kathmandu and other major towns across Nepal in the broad daylight but the government of Madhav Nepal has been least concerned with such criminal activities, and have not been protecting the lives and properties of media people in Nepal.

On the economic front, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has successfully put the country to the disastrous economic status and has squeeze the poor increasing the prices of food stuff such as sugar, rice, and other basic food stuff, and recently he has increased the prices of petroleum products fourth time during the last ten months of his reign.

As soon as Madhav Nepal became the Prime Minister, he has laid the foundation stone of constructing 26 km long tunnel for bringing water from the Melamchi River to the Kathmandu Valley, and to construct the Fast Track between Kathmandu and Hetauda, and of many other projects. However, nothing has happened to anyone of those projects so far.

The Madhav government has not been serious about the shortage of power that has been causing blackout almost a whole day in some areas, and about the shortage of water across the country, and does not think of expediting construction of the power and water projects but Prime Minister Madhav Nepal misuses millions of rupees if not billions of taxpayers’ money for his foreign visits and for paying to the supporters of his government.

Prime Minister Madhav Nepal is not accountable to the people, and does not want to be responsible for anything. So, he has been saying to the opposition that the opposition parties will be responsible for not writing a constitution on time, for not integrating the two armies into one army, and for anything that goes wrong in the country.

Not taking responsibility for anything going on in the country, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has proved himself not fit to be in the position of the Prime Minister. However, the family of 22 political parities has been supporting him to be on the position. Thus, the family rule has been repeating in Nepal.

Nepalis have ended the dynastic rule and set up the people’s rule called ‘Loktantra’ in 2008 but the rule of the family of the unscrupulous political parties have continued. So, Nepalis have not been able to benefit from the positive results of ‘Loktantra’.

The family of the crooked political parties constitutes of two major political parties such as NC and CPN-UML, several minor communist parties, three parties of former Panchas, three parties of Madheshi politicians and many less known political parties that have one or more seats in the legislature. Legislators of these entire unscrupulous political parties have been supporting the man rejected by voters in two constituencies, for the position of the Prime Minister thus making the illegitimate person a legitimate Prime Minister heavily misusing the people’s mandate given for a legitimate rule and the rule of law.

So, celebrating the ‘Loktantra’ day does not make any sense to Nepalis as long as Nepalis don’t have the rule of law. The government of illegitimate Prime Minister Madhav Nepal made legitimate by the unscrupulous legislators has made the mockery of celebrating the ‘Loktantra’ day not following the principles and values of ‘Loktantra’.
