Sixteen opposition political parties including the Vaidhya’s CPN-Maoist held a meeting at the Sanepa NC headquarters and warned the government of facing the street protests if it were to fail in quitting the office for paving them to grab the office; leaders at the meeting concluded that a consensus on any key issues including fresh elections to a new CA would be possible only after the ouster of the current government. Coming out of the meeting, Vice-president of NC Ram Chandra Poudel said that they decided to give a priority to 'movement' to force Prime Minister Bhattarai out of the office, as the ruling parties were not willing to leave the office voluntarily; the opposition parties apparently alarmed by the decision of the Maoist-led ruling alliance on making efforts to turn the current government into an election government on Saturday, September 22, 2012 made the opposition to meet for putting pressure on the government to quit the office, according to nepalnews.com.
President of NC Sushil Koirala decided to leave the race for the office of a next prime minister in favor of the rivals Sher Bahadur Deuba and Ram Chandra Poudel. “Koirala is in favor of becoming the prime minister only if there was consensus both within and outside the party on his candidacy,” said a NC leader close to him, adding that Koirala won’t be in the fray in case there is majority-led government. “If there is a chance for the NC to lead a new government, it will be either Poudel or Deuba, but not Koirala now.” the leader said, according to the news posted on myrepublica.com on September 24, 2012.
The ruling UCPN-Maoist has said that the NC should not be given the leadership of a new government, as it would cause ‘political imbalance´ in the country since the Head of State represents the NC. "There is no any ground for the NC to claim the leadership of a new government. A situation has emerged for our party to claim the leadership of the new government again," spokesperson for UCPN-Maoist Agni Prasad Sapkota said in a meeting with journalists at the party headquarters in Perisdanda on Saturday, September 22, 2012. The remarks came as a reaction to the strong demands made by the NC for taking up the rein of a new government to hold the fresh elections to a new CA.
Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda said that there were no other alternatives to a national unity government at this juncture; so, it would be constituted soon. “We have fixed September 25 as the deadline for the political parties to hold internal discussion on thorny issues,” said Prachanda adding that, “ after Sep 25, we will intensify talks between parties to form a national consensus govt. Any party may lead the new consensus government as the political scenario has changed.” Prachanda was in Pokhara yesterday late afternoon reportedly for the rest and recuperate, according to thehimalayantimes.com.
NC and CPN-UML think that the involvement of CPN-M, MJF-N and other political forces that do not support the ruling coalition, will make their voice stronger while dealing with the ruling coalition. “We should not ignore the CPN-M, MJF-N and other political forces if we want national consensus in the true sense. Our party wants to involve them in future talks and it will raise the issue strongly in the four-party meeting tomorrow,” said CPN-UML secretary Bishnu Paudel, according to ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE’ of September 22, 2012.
