Chinese protest against Nepalese Parliamentarians Meeting Dalai Lama

Issue 28, July 12, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On July 5, 2009, in response to the Chinese protest against some Nepalese parliamentarians mostly belonging to the Tarai political parties meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, spokesman for the Nepalese Foreign Ministry Madankumar Bhattarai has said that the Nepalese parliamentarians’ meeting with Dalai Lama without informing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not politically appropriate; Nepal has been following the one-China policy and will continue to stick to it; Tibet is the part of China and it will remain with China.

Concerning the issue of Nepalese parliamentarians meeting with Dalai Lama, former Chinese Ambassador to Nepal has recently visited Nepal and has met with Prime Minister Madhav Nepal who apparently is not aware of the Nepalese parliamentarians meeting with Dalai Lama.

Nepalese parliamentarians meeting with Dalai Lama have claimed that they have met with Dalai Lama in their private capacity not representing any political party or the government.
