Issue 19, May 9, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

May 3, 2010: the UCPN-Maoist cadres have peacefully enforced the shutdown of Nepal on May 2, 2010. They have let run the ambulances, milk and water tankers, vehicles of reporters and of the diplomatic missions in Nepal otherwise they have brought everything to a complete halt. Following the media reports, it has been clear that thousands of Maoist cadres have traveled to Kathmandu from different parts of the country for participating in the protest marches and in the rallies.

The protestors have let open stores for two hours from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM for the people to buy essential things. They held torchlight marches in the evening. No serious hostility has occurred on May 2, 2010.

From the early morning of May 3, 2010, the Maoist cadres have been on the streets to enforce the shutdown. They have continued their protest marches and have assembled at the main centers in Kathmandu. It seems that they are determined to run their protest programs peacefully.

At the same time, leaders of the three major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML have sat together for talks at the Radisson Hotel in Kathmandu on the evening of May 2 but they have not come to any common understanding.
