January 17, 2012: speaking at the inauguration of the Second BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sector Technical and Economic Cooperation) meeting held in Kathmandu, Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha said, "This century may well see economic power shift to Asia with new powers continuing to grow and making the presence felt in the global arena."
"The challenges of sustainable development, safeguarding the environment, stabilizing the global population, bridging the gulf between the rich and the poor and ending abject poverty from our region will take the forefront thus necessitating regional cooperation more than even before," ‘The Economic Times’ of India quotes the deputy prime minister.
The second BIMSTEC ministerial meeting held in Kathmandu on poverty alleviation is to endorse the regional Poverty Plan of Action (PPA) proposed by Nepal after consulting with the representatives from the member countries according to ‘The Economic Times.’
The first BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting held in Dhaka in 2008 on Poverty Alleviation had entrusted Nepal with the task of preparing a draft of PPA taking inputs from other member countries, and submit it at the second meeting to be held in Kathmandu for endorsement.
