NC Proposes Ram Chandra Poudel For PM

Issue 30, July 25, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

July 18, 2010: the NC leaders have ultimately agreed on Ram Chandra Poudel to be the candidate for a new Prime Minister on Saturday, July 17, 2010. Apparently, Sher Bahadur Deuba has endorsed the proposal for making Poudel a candidate for a Prime Minster. If it is so, and Deuba cooperates on Poudel for a new Prime Minister then the NC is on the right track of being a politically matured party; however, it remains to be seen how three-term former Prime Minister Deuba would act in the coming days.

After endorsing the candidacy of Poudel for a new Prime Minister, the NC leaders have approached the leaders of the Madheshi Political Parties and the UCPN-Maoist. The Madheshi leaders have told the NC leaders to come up with their clear stand on the federalism and other concerns of the Madheshi people before asking for their support for a new government. The UCPN-Maoist leaders have simply told the NC leaders that they would support Poudel sitting on the opposition bench.

The NC leaders have been critical of federalism and have been for keeping the political status quo acting against the changes brought by the People’s Movement of 2006. However, the Madheshi leaders had worked together with the NC and CPM-UML leaders to get two of their Madheshi brethren get elected to the first president and vice-president of the new Nepal.

At the same time, Poudel himself has met with two weird politicians such as Narayan Man Bijuckchhe and KP Oli at their respective residence in Bhaktapur seeking their support for his candidacy for Prime Minister.
