Controversy Over Human rights In Cambodia

Issue 41, October 7, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 6, 2012: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has furiously reacted to the human rights report on his country prepared by the UN envoy stating for the envoy better go to his own country and work for human rights there. Prime Minister Hun Sen also criticized the UN human rights office in Cambodia, stating they were no more than long-term tourists. The UN envoy, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has referred, is a Nepalese national called Prof Surya Subedi and the country is Nepal.

In response to the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s reaction to his report, Prof Surya Subedi said, “Nepal has a liberal democracy where the judiciary is independent and people do not go to jail for criticizing the government. The civil society is vibrant and the Government in Nepal respects and listens to the representatives of civil society."

“There is room for improvement in the governance of Cambodia and my job is to identify the shortcomings that exist in the system and offer my recommendations to address them. I do not wish to descend into personal level and do not wish to have a dialogue with him or anybody in the Government through the media. I have had a good level of cooperation from the Government of Cambodia and my dialogues with the Prime Minister have been productive in the past. Our approach may differ on some issues, but they can be addressed in a mutually respectful manner and through dialogue,” nepalnews.com quotes Prof Surya Subedi also as saying.
