Shutdown Imposed by Tharus
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On July 10, 2008, indigenous people of Nepal Terai, Tharus protesting against the demands of some Madheshi groups for one-Madhesh province imposed highway and market shutdown in the 23 district of the Terai belt where they are in majority causing vehicular shutdown all over Terai.

In Birgunj, activists of the Madheshi People’s Rights Forum attempted to stop Tharus from closing the market area but Tharus fight them back and imposed the shutdown in the Market area.

Tharus are the indigenous people of Nepal Terai. They are immune from malaria. So they have been living in this area since time immemorial. Tharus say that immigrants have been displacing them; now, some so-called Madheshis have demanded ‘one-Madhesh on province’ disregarding the existence of Tharus causing a great concern about it for them.

Altogether 83 incidents of violence against dalits mainly caused by dalits marrying non-dalits have been recorded after the legislative-parliament declared Nepal free of untouchables.
